Powerful Stories of How God Uses Art & Artists

The January/February exhibit, Art = Ministry is up and looking amazing. The stories are even more amazing! Below are a host of photos of the exhibit.

Reminder: The Art Reception is Friday, January 29, from 6pm to 8pm in the Common Grounds Gallery. It's going to be an evening jam-packed with creativity! There will even be art tables for you to explore your artistic abilities. And of course, you'll hear from the artists, there will be a live painting demo, and our friend, Ramon will be here to stylize your name into graffiti. This is a family friendly evening. Snacks and coffee will be provided too. Hope you can make it!

Ministry is allowing God to use your gifts and abilities for the benefit of others, so that they may experience the love of Jesus through you. Gifts and abilities differ from person to person, as God uniquely makes us all for His glory. Some people minister through teaching. Some minister through music. Some minister through hospitality. Some minister through listening. You get it—the list goes on and on. In what ways does God use you to minister to others? Something I discovered powerfully over the past several years is how God uses some to minister through their art. This exhibit has many beautiful examples of just that—stories of how God touches lives through surrendered artists and creatives.

Join us on Friday, January 29nd from 6pm to 8pm for the "art = ministry" exhibit artist's reception. Artists will share briefly how God uses their creativity to minster to others, (these stories are powerful!), and enjoy seeing examples of their art while sipping Seattle's Best coffee and munching on snacks with new friends and old friends. We will have art tables for you to explore your own creativity and even a few of what I'm calling, roaming artists. You'll have come to see what I mean! It will be a creatively-charged evening to say the least! And it's a family-friendly event.

We have more than the 12 artists represented in this exhibit in Infused Arts who minister through their art. I’m proud of the creatives and artists at LWCC for having God’s heart and allowing Him to use them to impact the Kingdom for His glory! This is what Infused Arts is all about.

Quiet Reflection in the Gallery

The Gallery @ Common Grounds Coffee Bar at LWCC will be open on Friday, 4/15 and Friday, 4/22 from 4pm to 9pm for a quiet reflective walk through the April Exhibit, “A Journey of Love.”


There will be copies of the gallery booklet, The Heart Behind the Art, the lighting will be set appropriately, and soft music will play in the background.

I hope this will be a quiet time for you to meet with Jesus through the use of visual art during these last few weeks of the Lenten season.

"The Names of Jesus" Art Exhibit

It's up and it's looking good. "The Names of Jesus" art exhibit features thirteen artists from The Studio (the visual arts community of LWCC). You will see acrylic paintings, sculpture, photography, glasswork, sterling silver work, watercolor, pencil, graffiti fine art and and installation art.

Tonight, Friday, October 8, after the encounter: a night of worship, is the gallery opening in The Gallery @ Common Grounds Coffee Bar of Living Word Community Church. Encounter is 7:00-8:30 pm. The Gallery Opening is 8:30-9:30 pm. Coffee and light snacks will be available. We hope to see you at Encounter and the Gallery Opening tonight!

The Heart Behind the Art

 

Being on maternity leave has me a little backed up with work responsibilities. So, if you haven't read the current issue of The Heart Behind the Art for the awesome June/July exhibit at LWCC, I finally have it online. Here is the link ~ click here.

"In Light of the Empty Tomb" Exhibit

This exhibit idea was birthed out of the reality that we’d not be offering a Lenten Sacred Space this year. I posed this question to the artists of the monthly artists’ gathering, the studio, “In light of the empty tomb, how would you express your spiritual journey using your artistic abilities?” The art represented on the walls of the Gallery @ Common Grounds are these heartfelt expressions.

It’s somewhat easy to talk about our faith journey with others. But have you ever sat down and thought about what it looks like, visually? Consider where you are right this moment, what color would be associated with your faith journey? What shape would it resemble? Would it be two-dimensional or three dimensional? It’s intriguing to think of our spiritual journey with Jesus in this way, isn’t it? I find this to be a good prayer practice, especially if you consider yourself a “visual” person. I’d like to encourage you to reflect on this idea and maybe even ask God to show you a visual rendition of your relationship with Him. It can be a very powerful and moving experience.

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.

"In the  Light of the Empty Tomb" will be on display through April 25 in the Gallery @ Common Grounds at Living Word Community Church's coffee bar. the KidzArt Exhibit at LWCC

Every summer, we like to have an exhibit by the creative kids of Treasure Park, grades 1-6. This year we have an outstanding display of their creativity and talent.

Each child submitted their art work according to the theme, “God Created…” and I’m so pleased to have 3-D art this year, which you can find in the gallery cabinet in the coffee bar corner, near the kitchen doors. Please take time and experience the amazing art work and read about the artists in "The Heart behind the Art" gallery booklet (you can find that in the coffee bar ledge, next to the TV.) By early next week the gallery booklet will be online as well.

This exhibit runs Sunday, August 30 to Sunday, September 27.

Practically every adult can recall elementary art classes and their ability to create with freedom. As a young girl, I sat at our family’s dinning table for hours lost in imagination. All I needed was my box of colorful crayons or Play-Doh. I would dream up a kingdom of animals, castles, and princesses, then bring them to life on paper or through sculpture.

And He said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 18:3

The childlike desire to create often gets lost when we become adults. That passage from Matthew speaks deeply to me. I’m left to reflect: How can I apply that passage to my life and “become like a little child”—through my God-given creativity? How does God want me to express my faith and love for Him through my art work? Questions I will continue to ponder.

• Jerry Gleason ~ Wood carving
