First Friday's!!

I lift my eyes to the mountains - where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. - Psalm121:1-2
Graffiti-Style artwork by Ramon Trevino

Tomorrow evening is looking pretty darn nice for York and Lancaster's First Friday - mostly sunny, high 89, only 10% chance of rain, as per my Weather Channel app.

If you find yourself in Lancaster tomorrow for First Friday or are looking for excitement, you ought to stop by and support our very own Ramon Trevino. His graffiti-style art work will be on exhibit at the Lancaster Dental Arts - 60 West Walnut. I know he'd love to see familiar faces!

If you've never ventured out to a Lancaster First Friday, you should. The downtown area of Lancaster is gallery after gallery. People of all ages fill the sidewalks, galleries, and little eateries - enjoying the creativity that saturates the evening air, it's nearly electric! I LOVE IT! Parking usually keeps people from going downtown. I can't parallel park to save my life! So we always park in the Prince Street Garage (on the corner of Orange and Prince), easy in and easy out. The benefit is that it's right in the middle of the action! Yeah, it costs a few bucks but it's totally worth it.

York's First Friday has it going on too, just on a smaller scale. So if the drive to Lancaster is to daunting, check out York. Here's the flyer for tomorrow night's First Friday in York, there's some fun things going on. Grab your pile o' friends and head downtown to support York's growing art scene!

Either way you choose - I hope you enjoy your weekend!

Mindfulness

(c) deAnn Roe | September 2012

“To be mindful, full of mind, that is,
to have our minds and souls
conscious and aware,
attuned to the things around us,
to the things of God.
For nothing is truly
ordinary in God’s created order.”

Manuel Luz

This month at The Studio is all about Seeing Beyond the Obvious. Through the medium of photography, the focus this evening was Mindfulness - slowing down, leaving the to-do lists behind, the emails, phone calls, grocery list, laundry, headaches from home or work. Leave it all and walk into the presence of God, "Be still and know that I am God" He tells us. Yes, we rarely actually take the time to do so. Tonight we did...

To practice mindfulness, one must abide with our Heavenly Father (to remain in). Jesus modeled this for us through His life - he remained connected in prayer and through the Holy Spirit so that He was always in step with the will of the Father.

Reflection... How well are you abiding with your Heavenly Father these days?

This evening's exercise included a 45 minute contemplative photography walk around our church property. Here's what I mean...ask the Holy Spirit to guide you to things; objects, trees, etc. If you feel a nudge to stop and take a closer look at something, even if it seems dumb, don't ignore it. Explore everything in detail taking photos along the way. The three photo's in this blog are a few of what I took.

Mindfulness leads to a renewed awareness of our surroundings - the beauty of creation all around us and the people God brings in to our lives. We learn to see the spiritual beyond the material, beyond the obvious.

God's creation speaks loudly of His glory. Can you hear it? Can you see it?

"Let the heavens be glad, and the earth rejoice! Let the sea and everything in it shout His praise! Let the fields and their crops burst out with joy! Let the trees of the forest rustle with praise before the Lord, for His is coming!" Psalm 96:11-13

The next time you see a sunset, pause and reflect on its beauty and its Creator. He paints the sky for your enjoyment. Enjoy it!

Seeing beyond the obvious... We need eyes to see Him, ears to hear Him. I love this poem by David Adam. I use it as a prayer....

VISION
O Lord
Extend my vision
Open my eyes to see
Beyond the obvious
To perceive that this is Your world
You are in it
You invade it
You pervade it
You enfold it
It is immersed in You

The challenge is to see the sacred in the ordinary.

The assignment this week:
As with any creative endeavor - always ask God to be present with you and that He would make His presence known to you.

Choose an object you use daily; maybe the bathroom faucet, a pair of shoes, coffee pot, or steering wheel of your car.

Using your camera take photos of that the ordinary object but in extraordinary ways.

Explore the object from every angle, change the perspective, have fun with lighting, use close up shots, move the object to a paradoxical location (i.e. an ice tray in the oven), Be creative! Have fun!

Print out 1-3 of your favorite photos from this series and bring them to The Studio next week, 9/12.

Reflection... as you look over your photos from this assignment, what surprises you? What have you learned about this ordinary object? Has your perception of this object changed in any way? What has the Holy Spirit revealed to you through this exercise?

See you next week as we explore LIGHT...

Sept Exhibit: KidsArt 5.0

The late summer exhibit for the past four years has been devoted to celebrating the budding young artists in our children’s ministry, kid::life. This year’s exhibit is very special, as it’s the first time the able::life ministry kids have participated! It’s a very anticipated exhibit! Very colorful and creative, the exhibit features both wall-hung art and three-dimensional pieces.
The theme is, “God Created…” From the perspectives of these students, we can see that they are enamored with God’s creation. You will see a clay baby, painted flowers, rainbows, and lots of animals, just to name a few!
The KidsArt 5.0 exhibit is on display Sunday, September 2 through Sunday, September 30. Let us encourage these young artists to use the creative gift given to them by the Master Creator, our God. May their artwork touch you and bring a smile to your face and heart.

Grace & peace ~

Seeing Beyond the Obvious

Seeing Beyond the Obvious - Photography (Cell phone cameras to dSLR's)

September @ The Studio meets every Wednesday, 9/5, 9/12, 9/19, and 9/26 in the Coffee Bar rooms C, D, E and F at Living Word Community Church. Bring your camera-enabled cell phone, point-n-shoot, film camera or dSLR, it really doesn't matter. We'll be exploring our world beyond the obvious using photography as the medium.

"It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see." Henry David Thoreau
Many people can look at the same thing and see something different. Our perspectives are unique so when taking a photo of that "thing" we all have a different eye, a unique composition. We will be exploring this and various other concepts through a number of fun, challenging, and reflective exercises, both inside and outside.

"Blessed are the eyes that see what you see." Jesus says in Luke 10:23

How can photography help you see the things of God? See His movement in your life? Change the way you see the world? Yes, more intriguing ideas that we'll cover in September @ The Studio.

Join us for this exciting, playful, and reflective month as we use our cameras to see beyond the obvious. No fee but we do need an RSVP. Please respond via email to deAnn at or call the church at 717-755-0089 x126. If you are on Facebook, you can RSVP by clicking here.

See you in September!

Unwanted Guests

Yellow jackets, a.k.a Wasps. Not my favorite of God's created critters. Sorry. I feel the same about knats, mosquitos, thousand-leggers, and most spiders.

It's come to our attention that these little yellow and black flying buggers have taken a liking to the Sacred Path and Prayer Gardens and are even building homes there. I want you to know that we are addressing their new addresses and evicting them immediately.

I apologize for anyone who has experienced the business-end of one of these guys while walking or sitting in this sacred space.

Should you come across a nest, please take note of which garden it's in (the sign post in the garden has a number on it) and a general location so we can remove them peacefully. You can email deAnn or call her at 717.755.0089 x126 with their whereabouts.

Nature. It's wild and crazy. And often unwanted guests make an appearance.

Grace & peace,
deAnn
