Sept @ The Studio | Pointillism

Pointillism= is a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of color are applied in patterns to form an image. Georges Seurat and Paul Signac developed the technique in 1886, branching from Impressionism.

Yes, at The Studio in September, using acrylics, we'll be exploring pointillism. We are so excited!

The fee is $8 and that gets you an 12x16 stretched canvas (no canvas panel this time!) and paint/brushes. We will have photos from three or four of our photographers for you to choose from, or be in inspired by. Feel free to bring your own picture for inspiration if you prefer.

by artist Georges Lemmen
For more information on Pointillism you can Google it or click here. September's project will be on 9/3, 9/10 and 9/17 from 6:30 to 8:30pm in the Coffee Bar of Living Word Community Church. Open Studio is on 9/24. You can use that evening to complete your painting if you desire.

I've purchased 25 canvases, so hold your spot by emailing deAnn!

We are looking forward to seeing you starting at 6:30pm on September 3!

Get Creative | July

July at The Studio is a fun and creative month designed to introduce you to new ideas and tips and maybe some mediums you've not worked with before. But our biggest hope is that you will be inspired and that your creativity will be stretched!

Each Thursday evening is a "stand-alone" topic, so you can come to them all or to just a few. Here's the line up (as you can see, each evening has a designated fee associated with it based on the supplies we'll use that night). NOTE: we will be meeting in room #320 in Kid::Life - the last room on the left in the yellow carpet-tiled hall.

July 2 - TEXTURES ($6 to cover supplies)
July 9 - RESISTS ($6 to cover supplies)
July 16 - PHOTOGRAPHY (no fee! Yay!) Bring your photo-taking device
July 23 - YUPO & ACRYLIC INK AND WATERCOLORS ($8 to cover supplies)
July 30 - OPEN STUDIO ($6 to cover supplies) This is a creative free-for-all night!

On 7/2 we'll dive into textures - working on an 11x14 canvas panel, you'll create a mixed media project using a variety of items to create texture. This is a valuable technique to creating depth in your work.

On 7/9 we'll work with resists, meaning creating white space with rubber cement, for example, on watercolor paper. Then we'll add color using watercolors. Then wait to see what happens!! So awesome.

7/16 we'll talk about contemplative photography and then head outside on our property for a photo prayer walk. Bring any photo-taking device, you don't need a fancy camera for this meaningful project.

7/23 we'll play with watercolor and acrylic inks on yupo paper (a non-absorbent paper that is super fun!) Trust me, you are going to love this.

7/30 is our OPEN STUDIO. Bring your project and work on it in community! If you bring your own supplies - it's free. There is only a fee associated if you need to use Infused Arts supplies (11x14 canvas panel and art materials/paints). You can come play with an we medium if you like. The sky is the limit! Come and experience creative play. *This is open to knitters, writers, photo editors, fiber artists, carvers, painters, scrapbookers, jewelry makers, painters, mixed media artists, etc. It's a fun evening of creating in a creative community.

To sign up for one or all of the Thursdays in July, contact deAnn Roe.

Hope to see you at July @ The Studio!

May at The Studio | Tangle Art

In school were you ever in trouble for doodling though lectures? Yeah, so was I. Well, now that you are an adult, you can doodle all you want and not get in trouble for it! May at The Studio is that month. We will be doing "tangle art" or "zentangle"- which is another name for what we'll be doing in May. Using ink watercolor paper, called "tiles," then we'll introduce watercolors and/or colored pencils - we will make beautiful little art pieces.

This practice is very relaxing. We'll approach it as a time of prayer - connecting with God through our creativity. All supplies will be provided and the cost of $5 covers all three weeks (May 7, 14, and 21).

On the first session, 5/7: We'll introduce this art form, hand out and explain the materials then practice practice practice.

On the second session, 5/14: We'll build on what we learned and practiced the week prior by adding pencil for shading and using watercolors in a variety of ways to make your tangle art pop.

On the last session, 5/21: We'll go beyond the tile (the little pieces of paper we'll work on) to bigger ideas - like tangling a letter, or words. Talking about other ways to work in tangle art to your artwork (mixed media, for instance) and all the many other uses for this fun and relaxing art form.

+++++++

As always, the last Thursday of The Studio month is reserved for OPEN STUDIO! That is a time of creative play. For $5 you get an 11x14 canvas panel and use of all art supplies. Create what you like! Bring something to inspire you! If you choose, bring your own art supplies and project and there is no fee. Just come and create in a Spirit-filled community.

Names of God - Fall Exhibit

Hello Artists and Writers!

So, I’m excited to announce something pretty cool – something we’ve never done before at LWCC – a themed exhibit based on the Names of God. I found a very cool website that has listed all the Old Testament names of God along with a list with names of God that are descriptions of who God is, what He does and what He means to us, His beloved children. These names apply to either God the Father, the Son or the Holy Spirit – through the whole Bible. It’s quite a list, here’s the link. Watch the music video on the page too. Powerful!

What I envision for this exhibit is that you to prayerfully look over this list and if the Holy Spirit highlights one or more of them, look them up – study them, ask God about these names and reflect where you have experienced God in these ways. If you have a connection to one, begin to seek the Holy Spirit for wisdom and a creative idea – either a literal or non-literal depiction of that name or, better yet, an artistic rendition of how you have personally encountered that facet of God.

With a list so vast, I’m sure each of us who decide to participate, will have a different facet of who God is through these Biblical descriptions. What a cool visual this will be for our congregation!

Now for some details of how this will function:

·         Exhibit Show Dates: September & October 2015

·         What’s accepted: Wall hung art, 3D art (to fit in the display cabinets) and written reflections/poems (to be published in the gallery booklet, The Heart Behind the Art).

·         Deadline for art and written submissions: Sunday, August 16 (that gives you 6 month’s to create!)

·         Yes or No: I need to know if you plan to participate in this collective. Please let me know via email by the end of March.

·         I prefer you create a new piece of work rather than submitting something that you have done before that may “fit” the name. This is a prayer and artistic challenge…to reflect upon and purposefully create a new work of art at this time.

Prayerfully look over that list provided on the website (look up the scripture references too – I found one to be incorrect), then decide if you are up for the challenge! I believe this will be a powerful exhibit in two significant ways: 1) in your creating the art, reflecting on this particular name of God and how He shows you this side of Himself, praying as you paint this reflection of God’s nature and person... Your intimacy with the Lord will grow! And you will be transformed by His presence. 2) As the exhibit hangs in the multipurpose room of the Coffee Bar – in the Fall – the busiest time of year at the church, visually, people will “see God” and experience His powerful presence through each of your pieces. That will transform others. You can’t leave His presence unchanged. Guys – I’m super pumped to see what God will open up at LWCC as a result of this exhibit!!

So pray about this – and let me know if you are IN (email me before the end of this month). I’d like to know what name you chose, but I don’t need to know that by the end of March – that may take some time to ponder and pray over. I know, that is where I’m at and I’ve been thinking of this for months now!
If you say YES – I’ve got a special treat for you (not that I’m bribing you!! Haha!) but I’ve got some special gatherings planned for just those who are daring to do this project. The Lord is just now giving me some cool ideas for these gatherings… woo-hoo!

If you have any questions, please let me know!

Be in joy!

Exploring Color at The Studio

Exploring Color at The Studio will be a wonderful month of learning, practicing hands-on, and developing your color mixing and color matching skills so you have more confidence as an artist. God gave you your creativity, it’s your responsibility to develop and nurture it for His glory. He has placed images in you that need to be released. And if you are like me, I often feel ill-equipped and ill-trained, which drives my fear…then I never even try to express what He’s put in me. It’s the heart of Infused Arts in 2015 to change this! We want to help you become better equipped artists with hungry hearts to hear what God is speaking to you and encourage you to confidently release it into this world that so desperately needs His beauty, His truth, His love – through you, His beloved artist.

Here’s the details about how the month will shape up – LOTS of practice mixing colors!:
  • Jan 8 – Exploring the Color Wheel – mixing colors and making a color wheel sample
  • Jan 15 – Exploring Moods in Art through Color – more practice mixing colors, introducing shade, tone and tints
  • Jan 22 – Exploring Color: Emotions – this will be our main project so I’m not gunna give too many details about it! Haha! But I will tell you that the only colors that will be out will be red, yellow, blue, white and black… yes, by the end of the month, you will develop mad skills at mixing colors.
I will be ordering the color wheels very soon for the Exploring Color at The Studio, first class of three is on Thursday, Jan 8. Fee for the three weeks is $10, which includes a full-size Red-Blue-Yellow artist color wheel and all supplies for the projects. NOTE: If you have a color wheel already and don’t need another one, the revised fee for the three weeks is $5 – to cover the supplies. Please let me know if you don’t need a color wheel when you register for the studio.

If you haven't registered yet, it's not too late! Please RSVP (via email) by Sunday, 12/28 so I can place the order on Monday, 12/29.

January 29 is Open Studio, $5 (canvas panel and art supplies)
For those of you who attend the first 3 weeks of The Studio - we’ll have a cool prompt for you continuing to nurture your skill building in using the color wheel and mixing color. But that prompt will be an option. Not a must. Only if you are up for the challenge! J Otherwise, this Open Studio will function as usual.

NOTE: Open Studio is the last Thursday of every-other-month (Jan, Mar, May, Jul, Sep, Nov)

The Planning team is SO excited about Jan @ The Studio! Hope to see you there!

Merry Merry Christmas to you and a very blessed 2015 filled with the Joy of the Lord!

WILD ABSTRACTS @ The Studio

Wild Abstracts from 2013

Join us for two nights in September when we create wild abstract art inspired by artist Jackson Pollock, 9/11 and 9/18. Fee is $12 for one 30x30 wrapped canvas. You can reserve 2 canvases if you like, just RSVP to deAnn (droe@lwccyork.com) and let her know how many you want.

Check your basements, closets or garage fo...r any left-over interior latex wall paint from your home improvement projects. Bring it along to share with all. We will all chip in our wall paint (no oil base paints please) which is a good way to get rid of the stuff and have a variety of colors to choose from. For a few dollars you can go to Lowes or Home Depot and get sample size cans of any color you want. So you can custom create a painting for a specific room in your home.

We did this project last year (see the images in this post) and it was a HUGE HIT! So much fun! I hope you can join us in September. Room is limited so RSVP quick!

For these special nights at The Studio - we will NOT meet in the coffee bar but will meet in Kid::Life Room, 320.

Visual Psalms - March at The Studio

What's your favorite psalm, or verse(s) from a psalm?

March @ The Studio is inspired by a book I bought my daughter called "PSALMS for Young Children" by Marie-Hélène Delval. The rich, yet simple illustrations made me think we should do this at The Studio.

The psalms are very descriptive and evoke images in my heart, as I'm sure they do for you as well. We will spend the first three Thursdays in March bringing our favorite psalm verses into the visual using soft charcoal pastels OR watercolors (3/6, 3/13, 3/20). Fee is $5, which covers 2 pieces of Strathmore Pastel papers and use of soft pastels OR one piece of Strathmore Watercolor paper and use of watercolor paints and brushes. (Watercolor paper is SO expensive.) Bring your own supplies and there is no fee.
Between now and March @ the Studio, be in the psalms. Ask God to speak to you through them and then come prepared to bring your favorite verses into life.

Please RSVP via email to deAnn so we have enough supplies.

Also NOTE:

OPEN STUDIO is Thursday March 27 - $5 for canvas panel (11x14) and use of all art supplies. Come and let your creativity soar!

Open Studio & Wild Abstracts

November at The Studio is our EXPLORE month.
Due to Thanksgiving, we are only meeting on these dates: 11/7, 11/14, and 11/21.

 here's the rundown...
  • Thursday, 11/7 - OPEN STUDIO! Bring your project and work on it in community. OR for $5 you can get an 11x14 canvas panel and use of all art supplies and let your creativity run amok!
  • Thursday, 11/14 & 11/21 - "Wild Abstracts: Surrendering to the Spirit" Fee for these two weeks is $10 and that gets you a 30"x30" stretched canvas. We'll be creating artwork inspired by artist Jackson Pollock. NOTE: Please sign up by Friday, 11/1 so that we can order your stretched canvas. Email deAnn to reserve your spot.
Here are the details for these two evenings at The Studio:
We will focus on the art of Jackson Pollock, the innovator of a controversial, (is it really art?) loose form of abstract painting in the mid 20th century. Most of his work is energetic, vibrant and full of motion. We will learn how to swirl, drip, fling and flick latex wall paint onto large canvases using sticks, rulers, syringes, brushes, whisks and other unconventional tools (some may use their fingers and hands) to create fun, colorful pieces in the Pollack style of art.

NO PAINTING OR DRAWINGS SKILLS ARE GOING TO BE UTILIZED, so this is a class ANYONE would enjoy. Just surrender to the process of listening to the Spirit as He guides your hand and paint over the canvas.

The first week will involve a short introduction to the artist Jackson Pollack and some brief instruction. Then, you will have the opportunity to experiment with some techniques using a smaller "trial canvas" we will provide. When you feel ready, we will give you a 30 X 30 stretched canvas (included in class fee) on which to unleash your creation. In the second week, we will fellowship together to make a huge collaborative work of art.

What to bring:
  • A sense of FUN
  • Old kitchen utensils, wire whisks, rulers, sticks, brushes and other things to manipulate paint that you don't mind getting latex house paint on.
  • Any left over latex paint from previous home projects that you want to get rid of. We will supply some paint, so don't let the fact that you have none to bring keep you from coming to the classes! You can purchase some sample colors from Lowes or Home Depot if you want specific colors.
  • Large containers (like large empty Cool Whip containers) to put paint in from the buckets.
  • If you are not comfortable getting paint on your hands, we suggest a pair of gloves to protect them (like the ones used to wash dishes by hand) .
THIS CLASS WILL BE MESSY, so wear old clothes that you don't' mind getting paint on. However, to keep the church paint-less, we will be cautious!

Bruised Reed

"Bruised Reed" by deAnn Roe, the Hidden Me canvas focus.

We are two canvases into our Spiritual Self-Portrait exercise this month at The Studio. Last week we created the first canvas, "The Obvious Me." Last night we made our second canvas, "The Hidden Me." Next week, we conclude with the glorious, "Created Me" canvas - the me that Jesus died for me to be.

What a powerful exercise this is, to commune intimately with God and think deeply about who we are in Him...and who He is in us.

It's not too late to join us. The 4th Thursday this month is our "make up" evening, a night to complete your canvases or start one that you missed. The 5th Thursday this month is our sharing night... we'll show our three canvases, enjoy awesome fellowship, and of course, do some light eating. Art and food, a beautiful combination.

Join us this month at The Studio - for BeComing Imago Dei. Let your creativity interact with your relationship with God. You will be surprised by what happens...

Joy and peace,
deAnn

October @ The Studio

BeComing Imago Dei
October @ the studio
Create a series of three mixed-media spiritual self-portraits

Three 11x14" canvas panels and use of all art supplies are given to
you for a fee of $10 (for the whole month).

If you are thinking to yourself, “Geez, I’m not very good at creating art – I’m a writer, I’m a crafter, I can’t make ART.” Just remember Whose you are. You are a child of God, created in HIS image. He’s the source of all our creativity. It’s in you, trust it. Walk out in faith and explore His creativity in and through you. This is the month to do it – step out – because God will, and I mean He WILL meet you in a very special way through this project. I’ve seen it happen in 2011, the last time we did this exercise. Ignore the negative voices in your head and listen to the still small voice of your Father who believes in you because He knows you, He loves you, He created you so that you can create. God made you as a way to express Himself. Let’s do this!

One last thing about October at The Studio – the art we make is about the process NOT the product (the completed work). Although I know you will be so impressed by what you create and how God speaks to you through your faith-filled creating.

Okay, I’m done twisting your arm J But in all seriousness, I do hope you come each Thursday (6:30-8:30pm) in October to The Studio. You will be blessed. I know it. God is about to blow your hair back! Haha!

Please email me or call me (717.755.0089 x126) to let me know you are coming so I have enough canvas panels for every one!

Hope to see you this Thursday, 10/3 at The Studio. Below is the handout you need to read and reflect upon so you are ready to create on Thursday evening!

The Obvious Me

To be human is to be complex. In Genesis, God says we are created, uniquely created, in His image. This means we are both body and soul. We have a very obvious, or public, side to our lives. This obvious life is what we see in the mirror and what others see and experience when around us. Physical traits, our role in our family, in employment, our hobbies and interests are all quite obvious. So are some character qualities.

Below are a few questions to reflect upon as a way to prepare for the first spiritual self-portrait The Obvious Me

Remember, we are created in His image, which means we have His “creative blood” in us. Think of this project prep as a time to be with God in prayer as you examine your obvious, public, self. Invite God into your creative process and He will show up.

» What are some of my physical traits?
» What are my hobbies and interests?

» What am I known for?
» How would people describe me?
» How have people experienced life with me?

Are there items around your house that you’d like to incorporate into your Obvious Me self portrait? If you are addicted to coffee, bring coffee beans/grounds, photos of you, an image of your sports team or mountain bike, whatever. Be creative and think outside the box! No need to be literal here. It’s totally acceptable to think abstract. Please feel free to bring these items on Oct 3 to use in our project time.

engage @ the studio

September kicks off the studio for its new season. We'll focus on three areas: engage, grow, and explore. Each designed to take artists, writers, and creatives deeper into community, into their relationship with God and with their creativity.

Beginning on Thursday, September 5 we'll launch into engage @ the studio. What does this mean, exactly? Using Francis Chan's excellent and super-artistic video teaching series BASIC, we'll explore in depth Biblical Truth - how it relates to our personal walk with God and how it fleshes out in our creativity, be it the visual arts or literary arts.

The month of September will be a time of engaging with His Truth in the context of a creative community. Will there be any art making? Not formally, but we'd like you to bring your sketchbook or journal and be prayerfully considering how God may be speaking to you then work it out through your art work. More will be explained on the first night, 9/5 @ 6:30pm in the coffee bar at Living Word Community Church.

I have a real sense that God desires the whole heart of His artistically gifted and creative people. He wants to speak to us through our art and speak of His Kingdom through our art. Being in alignment with Him first and foremost will give our artwork power that we can't attain on our own efforts. We must co-create with His Holy Spirit.

Come, engage @ the studio in September alongside other artists, writers, and creatives and let's see what God does in us as an artistic community!

Joy and peace,
deAnn
